The website of UK aviation artist Jonathan Margetts

There is something amazing about flying and aircraft which is truly a magical feeling. The sense of freedom and wonderful scenery of sky and landscapes is a something to be treasured. Capturing this image in a quality painting is a memorable event.

There is nothing to beat owning an original piece of artwork that is very individual to you. They make idea gifts, presentation presents for the office, flying club or home display items.

As an experienced UK aviation artist, my aim is simply to offer you that opportunity within a sensible and affordable budget.

“I have a painting of all the aeroplanes I have been involved with as an owner. Jonathan stands out from many artists as he has a passion for  and understanding of aviation which translates directly to his finished works. I was very pleased with his rendition of our 1940 Tiger Moth, which I also felt represented great value as a unique piece. I am sure this work of art will become passed down the generations just as the Tiger Moth is has been and thats a nice thought"

"We are delighted to have the support of Jonathan Margetts and Art of Flying" says Stephen Bridgewater, Commercial Manager at Air Atlantique's Classic Flight. "His images of our classic aircraft combine his distinctive style with the passion of artist who clearly enjoys the subject matter. These paintings evoke the atmosphere of flying our veteran aircraft and are rendered in a most lifelike manner."

“To have such a talented artist produce paintings for Delta Jets was indeed an honour.  They are superb and we intend to make full use of them.  We shall be producing prints and cards and the paintings will be displayed in the reception area of our new facility at Cotswold Airport, Kemble, for all of our guests to view.  We thank Jonathan for his support of Delta Jets and are proud to have been working in partnership with him.”

"I am really delighted with my watercolour painting of the three Tiger Moths and the sharp detail and accuracy you have achieved. I have several hundred hours flying Tigers and you are one of the few artists who can make a Tiger look exactly like a Tiger to the purist. Thank you so much Jonathan"

Many of my paintings are completed using watercolours (click here to see how a watercolour painting progresses in stages) More recently, I have discovered using pastel pencils. I have found this to be a perfect art medium which provides a stunning way to enhance the beauty and brilliance of 'sky-scapes' and aerial scenery experienced whilst flying. Capturing the true essence of the aircraft and the magic of flying is the key to my work -looking and feeling as if the aircraft is actually flying-which is so important in any aviation painting.

Commissions

Having a commissioned painting is a fantastic opportunity and unique way to immortalise your very own aircraft or favourite aircraft on paper.

My pastel paintings when framed are a maximum of 20 x 16 inches. Watercolour paintings can be up to 24 x 30 inches frame size maximum.

Watercolour of of a wintry DC3 Scene

Prices for framed ready to hang paintings are £160 up to £395 for the larger sizes. I will confirm the total price before commencement of the painting.

In order for me to work on a painting, I will require, if available, as many good quality clear photographs in colour if applicable. Different angles to show as much detail is important. The scenery is very important in any painting and for aerial views having a good aerial perspective can make the painting very special. If you require specific scenery then I will require good quality reference photographs. Aircraft pictured on the ground can also make interesting pictures. Again good reference photographs are required.

I can email photographs of the painting at an early stage and when completed for your inspection, if required.

The price includes the frame, mount and glass and is ready for wall hanging.

A 20% deposit is required upon confirmation of a commission order request.

Carriage is charged extra as appropriate but typically this will be no more than £15.

PAYMENT

You can pay two ways, either by sending a cheque to myself at the address shown on the contact page, OR you can pay by PAYPAL (You do not need an account with PAYPAL to do this). I will email you a PAYPAL invoice once the price has been agreed and your payment can then be made on a secure trusted PAYPAL on line method by following the simple easy to follow PAYPAL instructions. All major credit and debit cards are accepted by PAYPAL). Two payments installments option available.

Thank you.

"It is a great accolade for Jonathan to have chosen to paint The Yakovlevs Display Team. He has captured the movement of the aircraft through the air and I am absolutely delighted with the painting"

"We have three of Jonathan's  pastel aviation paintings hanging in our airfield restaurant and it must be said they draw a great deal of interest and much favourable comment from our clientele. Jonathan has beautifully captured not only the images but, rather brilliantly, a wonderful ambience depicting these three different aircraft, representing Compton Abbas airfield, in flight".
Clive Hughes- Managing Director, Compton Abbas Airfield, UK.
